Kok Tobe

Kok Tobe is the Kazakh phrase meaning, Blue Hill. Kok Tobe offers stunning mountain and city views that are worth visiting. A restaurant, carnival games, and other theme park style rides are located here. There are two ways to reach the top. The Kok Tobe gondola station located near Abai Square or via service road. There is a guarded toll booth at the start of the road. Limited parking is available at the top so most people walk up the road or take the service shuttle.

Abai Square rests at the base of Kok Tobe and is located at the intersection of Dostyk Avenue and Abai Ave, two of the busiest roads in the city. The square is named after the late 19th century Kazakh poet and composer, Abai Kunanbaiuly. Historical buildings from the 70’s such as the Republic Palace concert hall and the Kazakhstan Hotel are also located here.

Almaty Tower was built in the late 1970’s and was briefly used to broadcast television before a fire broke out. The tower is not open to the public due to concerns about the unsteady ground on which is what built on. Its history and design certainly sets it apart from other observation towers around the world.

Views of the Trans-lli Alatau Mountain Range.

One of my favorite pictures. These girls asked us to take a photo and we did the obvious of course.
